Spay
Spay or ovariohysterectomy (OHE) is a surgery performed on female cats and dogs.  This surgery involves removing both ovaries and the uterus to the level of cervix so the pet will no longer come into estrus (heat) or have babies.  We recommend this surgery for all dogs and cats that are not intended for breeding after five months of age.  If performed before the first heat period, the risk of mammary cancer is reduced by 80% - 90%.  Other benefits are prevention of pregnancy, no estral bleeding and prevention of howling in cats.  Most patients have no external sutures and usually go home the afternoon of surgery.

Neuter
Neutering is a surgery performed on male cats and dogs to remove both testicles so they no longer produce testosterone and sperm preventing unwanted pregnancies.  We recommend this surgery for pets not intended for breeding after five months of age.

In cats, neutering reduces behavioral problems such as urine spraying, inter cat aggression, and roaming.  In dogs, neutering reduces the risk of medical problems such as prostate and testicular cancer and infections as well as the behavioral problems of urine marking, roaming and aggression.  For most pets, neutering is an outpatient (one day) procedure, and they do not have any external sutures.
